cmiVFX just released the first video in a brand new game design series based on the Unity3D game engine, taught by Creative Director and 3D industry veteran, Martin Knapp. Throughout each of the many lessons, students are introduced step-by-step to the powerful Unity3D game engine. Unity3D has been used to create countless games supporting all major systems and mobile devices. In this introduction, students will learn to build an entire game level from scratch, including textures, lights, advanced particles, and even how to add first-person and third-person game controllers so that they can explore and play the games they just created.

Chapter Descriptions

Introduction

This training video introduces students to the Unity3D game engine and shows them where they can download and install the latest version. Unity is free to use by all and is available at the Unity website.

Reverting your settings

It's important that when students run their own version on Unity while watching this video, that the user interface and settings match that of the instructors through out these videos. So here we take a moment to learn how to revert these settings back to the default settings.

Launching your first project

In this video we take a look at how the Unity file structure works and how to launch and open Unity project.

Importing projects

There are tons of amazing resources and projects that are available to be downloaded for free from the Unity community. In this video we take a look at how to download and import these powerful assets.

Switching between projects

In this video students learn how to efficiently switch between different Unity projects, keeping their workflows optimized.

Customizing the user interface

Unity is a highly customizable software, and in this video we learn how to adjust the Unity user interface and how to navigate between different window configurations.

Navigation

Here students will learn how to navigate around 3D space. Efficiently moving around all 3 axis of 3D space will help you be more productive when building game levels.

Manipulating objects

Here students will learn how to create 3D primitives. Additionally they will learn how to move, rotate, and scale each of these objects.

Texturing

Here students will learn how to add textures to their 3D objects. You will also learn about UV space and how to stretch, rotate, and tile textures.

Creating trees

Unity has a very powerful tree generator which lets you create and endless variety of trees. Here you will learn how to add trees to your 3D scene and how to adjust their attributes.

Adding lights

This video will introduces students to the different lights that are available for use in Unity.

Adjusting lights

Here students will dive deeper and learn about the many different attributes and settings that can be adjusted with the various lights available within Unity.

Working with particles

Unity has a powerful particle system which allows you to add a vide variety of effects to your games. Sparkles, fire, and water are just some of the particle systems that will be covered in this video.

Creating a game controller

Now that students have completed building their first level, this video will show you how to add in a first person, or third person game controller which will let you explore your game level.

Creating a final build

In this video, students will learn how to create a final build of their game level, which can then be published to major game systems, mobile devices, and the web.
